COLORADO SPRINGS — The top male runner at the state cross country meet came from the smallest classification.

Lyons junior Paul Roberts not only won his third consecutive individual title, he did it in dominating fashion. His time of 16 minutes, 13.1 seconds headed all competitors in Class 2A by nearly 50 seconds.

“And our team did great,” Roberts said as his school also won the classification championship, its third in a row.

In 5A, Pomona’s Marcelo Laguero won in 16:19.4. Mountain Vista won the team race, its third in succession, despite its top placer finishing 15th.

Palmer Ridge’s Eric Hamer (16:17.7) was the winner in 4A, and he led the Bears to the team title, their first.

And Ben Butler of SkyView Academy was the 3A champion in 16:18.2. Alamosa won its fourth team title and first since 1993.

In girls, Lauren Gregory made it back-to-back titles. The Fort Collins sophomore cruised in 18:55.8 and told reporters afterward that she was “going to cry,” but they were tears of joy — her Lambkins team also took down favored and three-time defending champ Monarch 113-118.

The best female effort belonged to Katie Rainsberger (18:50.3), an Air Academy junior who was runner-up the past two years to the incomparable Elise Cranny of Niwot. Mountain View won its third overall title.

Estes Park sophomore Lily Tomasula-Martin won it all in 3A, and Alamosa completed a gender sweep; and sophomore Tabor Scholl became West Grand’s first winner, while Lyons completed its 2A sweep.
